HH Sheikh Mohammed Launches Dubai Metro Blue Line

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, visited the Dubai Metro Blue Line construction site at International City 1 on 3 May.

During the visit, His Highness received a full briefing on the project’s progress, reviewed the architectural designs for the station interiors, and formally commanded the activation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Al Wugeisha — officially launching the tunnelling phase of the Blue Line project. This is the complete account of what happened, what was reviewed, and what was said.

⚡ Quick Brief — The Visit and What It Means

  • 📅 Date: 3 May 2026
  • 📍 Location: International City 1 underground construction site, Dubai Metro Blue Line
  • 🚇 What was launched: Tunnelling phase — TBM Al Wugeisha activated, excavating in 3 simultaneous directions
  • 🏗️ Project status: 20% complete as of 3 May 2026 — target 30% by end of 2026
  • 👥 Workforce: 10,000+ workers, 500+ engineers, 180 rail specialists
  • 📅 Opening date: 9 September 2029

What His Highness Did at the Construction Site

The visit to the International City 1 site followed a structured sequence. His Highness arrived, received a full project briefing, reviewed station designs, and then gave the formal command to begin tunnelling. Here is exactly what happened at each stage.

1
Arrival and reception at the construction site His Highness arrived at the International City 1 underground station construction site and was received by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Senior executives from the project delivery consortium — MAPA (Turkey), LIMAK (Turkey) and CRRC Hong Kong — were also present, along with senior members of the Dubai ruling family and government.
2
Full briefing on the project’s progress to date His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer briefed His Highness on the complete timeline of the Blue Line: from the Ruler’s approval of the route in November 2023, to the contract award in December 2024, to the foundation stone ceremony in June 2025. Al Tayer presented the current completion figure of 20%, confirmed over 13 million work hours completed across all sites without a single lost-time injury, and outlined the path to 30% completion by end of 2026 and full opening on 9.9.2029.
3
Review of station architectural and interior designs Before the tunnelling was launched, His Highness reviewed the architectural and interior design concepts for the upcoming Blue Line stations. This included the entrance and interior design for International City 1 — the largest underground station in the Dubai Metro network at 44,000m² — and the bespoke standalone design for the Emaar Properties Station at Dubai Creek Harbour. The Emaar Properties Station, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) — architects of the Burj Khalifa — will stand 74 metres tall underground, making it the world’s tallest metro station. His Highness also reviewed the five elemental design themes — Heritage, Air, Water, Earth and Fire — that have been assigned across the 14 stations of the line.
4
Formal command to activate TBM Al Wugeisha His Highness gave the official command to activate the Tunnel Boring Machine named Al Wugeisha — a 163-metre, 2,000-tonne machine that immediately began excavating underground in three simultaneous directions from International City 1: north-west toward Mirdif, north toward the Auto Market corridor, and east toward Al Warsan (International City 2). This activation marked the formal start of the tunnelling phase — the most technically demanding stage of the entire Blue Line project. Tunnelling is now underway 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at an average rate of 13 to 17 metres per day.
5
Official statement published and circulated internationally Following the site visit, His Highness shared the details on his official X account (@HHShkMohd). The Dubai Media Office published a full statement, which was circulated by WAM (UAE state news agency) and picked up by international media within hours. The post named both the Blue Line and the Gold Line — announced on 22 April 2026 — as together forming “the world’s newest and most beautiful metro.”

TBM Al Wugeisha — The Machine Now Drilling Beneath Dubai

The TBM is named Al Wugeisha by the RTA — a practice used to give identity to machines that spend years underground, invisible to the city above but fundamental to what it becomes.
