Is the Dubai Gold Line Driverless? What We Know About the Tech

Fully underground, 40 metres deep, tunnel-bored under a live city. Here is everything confirmed about the Dubai Gold Line’s technology.

QUICK ANSWER
The Gold Line will almost certainly be driverless, consistent with every other Dubai Metro line. It will run up to 40 metres underground — making it Dubai’s first fully underground metro line — built using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The RTA has not yet made a specific driverless statement about the Gold Line, but Dubai’s entire metro network operates on automated, driverless technology.

Is the Gold Line Driverless?

Almost certainly yes. Dubai operates the world’s longest driverless metro network. The Red Line, Green Line, Route 2020, and Blue Line are all fully automated. There is no indication the Gold Line will depart from this standard — and every reason to believe it will follow it.

Note: The RTA has not yet issued a specific statement about Gold Line automation. This is a well-supported inference from Dubai’s established operating model, not a confirmed specification.

How Deep Is 40 Metres?

Metro system Depth
Dubai Gold Line Up to 40 metres
Dubai Red/Green Lines Mostly elevated (above ground)
Dubai Blue Line Mix of elevated and ground-level
London Underground (deep tube) 20–60 metres
Singapore MRT (deep tunnels) 20–35 metres

At 40 metres, the Gold Line tunnels sit well below Dubai’s existing underground infrastructure — water mains, utility corridors, building foundations. This is what makes the “minimal disruption” claim credible. The drilling happens far below street-level life.

How Will They Build It Under an Active City?

The RTA confirmed the Gold Line will use Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) — the same technology used on major urban metro projects worldwide including the London Elizabeth Line and Riyadh Metro. TBMs drill continuously underground, removing spoil and installing pre-cast concrete lining rings as they advance. The process is almost entirely invisible at street level.

The Gold Line will use the latest tunnel boring machine technology for an entirely underground execution, ensuring minimal disruption to residents and existing urban developments. — HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, RTA

Dubai’s First Fully Underground Metro Line

Dubai Metro Line Structure
Red Line Mostly elevated, some underground sections
Green Line Mix of elevated and underground
Route 2020 Mostly elevated
Blue Line Mixed
Gold Line 100% underground, end to end

No viaducts. No visual intrusion on streetscapes. Better noise insulation for surrounding communities. And the ability to route under densely built areas that could not accommodate elevated tracks.

What We Do Not Know Yet

These details will emerge through the tender process in 2026:

  • Train manufacturer (Alstom, Siemens, or another supplier)
  • Station platform design and accessibility specifications
  • Ventilation and air conditioning at 40m depth
  • Wi-Fi and connectivity standards inside tunnels
  • Nol card integration and fare structure

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dubai Gold Line driverless?
Almost certainly yes. Dubai operates the world’s longest driverless metro network and every existing and planned line is automated. The RTA has not yet issued a specific statement about Gold Line automation, but it is strongly implied by Dubai’s operating model.

How deep does the Dubai Gold Line run?
Up to 40 metres underground, according to the official announcement. This makes it significantly deeper than most of Dubai’s existing metro infrastructure, which is largely elevated.

Why is the Gold Line fully underground when other Dubai Metro lines are elevated?
Running entirely underground allows the Gold Line to route through densely built urban areas like Satwa, Business Bay, and JVC without the land acquisition and disruption required for elevated viaducts. It also eliminates visual intrusion on established neighbourhoods.

What technology does the Gold Line use to build tunnels?
Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), per the RTA announcement. TBMs drill continuously underground and install pre-cast concrete lining as they advance, making the construction process largely invisible at street level.
