Station Design Themes
Every Blue Line station has been assigned an architectural and interior design theme. The RTA confirmed five elemental themes plus bespoke individual designs for two stations. The themes govern each station’s colour palette, materials, lighting and spatial character.
The Emaar Properties Station — World’s Tallest Metro Station
At 74 metres, the Emaar Properties Station at Dubai Creek Harbour is the tallest metro station in the world. It is underground, yet rises 74 metres — taller than most mid-rise buildings it is surrounded by. For comparison, the average residential tower in JBR is 90 to 120 metres.
Who are SOM? Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) is a US architecture and engineering firm responsible for the Burj Khalifa, One World Trade Center in New York, and the Jeddah Tower currently under construction in Saudi Arabia. The Emaar Properties Station is their first Dubai Metro commission. The design uses natural light as a primary architectural material, with a central gateway that allows sunlight to reach platform level underground.
International City 1 — The Largest Underground Station in Dubai Metro
International City 1 is not only the Y-junction of the Blue Line — it is the most complex station ever built in Dubai’s metro history. Three Tunnel Boring Machines operate simultaneously from this single station, excavating in different directions at once. Its 44,000m² floor area is larger than many shopping malls.
