Good news first.
If you hold a British Citizen passport, you do not need to apply for a Dubai visa before you leave the UK. No embassy visits, no forms, no fees paid upfront. You simply board your flight, land at Dubai International Airport, and collect a free visa stamp at the immigration desk on arrival.
That said, there are a few things the average UK traveller gets wrong every year; and some of them carry real consequences, including fines, being turned away at the gate, or a customs issue that no one warned them about.

Do UK Citizens Need a Visa for Dubai?
The short answer: no, not in advance.
Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the UAE grants British Citizen passport holders a visa on arrival. Meaning immigration issues it to you when you land.
As confirmed by Emirates’ official visa guidance, British Citizen passport holders receive a 90-day multiple-entry visit visa, issued free of charge at the immigration counter.
It is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
What does 90-day multiple-entry visit visa mean?
It means that the 90 days you spend in UAE can be spread across multiple entries within that 6-month window. You do not have to use it in one continuous stay.

What Is a “Visa on Arrival”? How Does It Actually Work?
A visa on arrival (sometimes called a VOA) means the country issues your permission to enter when you physically arrive, rather than requiring you to apply beforehand. For Dubai, the process takes about as long as it does to reach the front of the immigration queue.
You hand over your British passport. ↳ The officer scans it, stamps it ↳ And you walk through. That stamp is your visa.
There is nothing to print, no reference number to show, and no app to open. Your passport does all the talking.
The One Rule That Catches UK Residents Off Guard: This Only Applies to British Citizens
The visa-on-arrival applies to your nationality, not your UK residency status.
This distinction matters for the many people living in the UK on non-British passports.
- If you hold a British Citizen passport, you are fine. You will get visa on arrival.
- If you hold a different nationality passport and live in the UK on a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), a visa, or Indefinite Leave to Remain, your eligibility depends entirely on your home country passport, not your UK status.
The situation in 2026 for the most common nationalities living in the UK:
- Indian nationals with a valid UK visa or BRP of 6+ months — eligible for a 14-day paid visa on arrival (AED 100 / ~£22 / ~$27). Extendable once for another 14 days.
- EU and Schengen passport holders — most receive the same 90-day free visa on arrival. Irish passport holders receive 30 days.
- Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nigerian and many others — must apply for a pre-arranged e-visa before flying. Do not assume the on-arrival rule covers you.
If you are travelling with family members holding different passports, check each person individually. Airlines bear responsibility for passengers who board without proper documents, so they will check yours at the gate.
Your Passport Validity Rule
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in Dubai.
UAE immigration does not make exceptions, and Emirates and other carriers will refuse to board you at check-in if your passport fails this test.
HMRC passport renewals currently take 3–10 weeks.
If your Dubai trip is in December and your passport expires in April next year, renew it before you book flights. Doing it the week before departure is a gamble you do not want to take.
How Long Can You Stay — and What If You Need More Time?
The standard visa on arrival gives you 90 days within a 6-month window, which covers the vast majority of holidays, long stays and extended visits.
If you need more time, you have three realistic options.
Option 1: Extend inside the UAE (the easiest route now)
Since December 2025, most 30-day and 60-day tourist and visit visas can be extended fully online through the ICP portal, without leaving the country.
The fee is AED 500 plus an AED 100 application charge. This has effectively made the traditional visa run largely obsolete for most people (though there are cases where it still applies).

Option 2: Pre-arrange a longer visa before you travel
If you know in advance that you need more than 30 days — for a longer holiday, a relocation trip, or to explore employment — apply for a 60-day visa before departure.
Available through authorised UAE agents.
Standard processing takes 24–72 hours.
Cost ranges from approximately £30–£90 / $38–$115 depending on duration and processing speed.
Option 3: The 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa
For frequent travellers, this is genuinely useful.
Introduced in 2020 and still available in 2026, it allows unlimited entries over 5 years with each stay capped at 90 consecutive days.
It requires an application and a fee, but for anyone visiting Dubai twice a year or more it removes the admin entirely.
Overstay Fines: What Happens If You Stay Too Long
The rules here tightened considerably in late 2025.
Many UK travellers assume there is a buffer if they stay a day or two past their visa expiry. There is not. Fines start the day after your visa expires, and you cannot leave the country until you settle them.

Set a calendar reminder for your visa expiry date the moment you arrive.
It takes thirty seconds and saves you hundreds of pounds.
What You Cannot Bring Into Dubai
Your visa gets you in. What you pack is a separate matter entirely, and Dubai customs operates actively.
Several things that are perfectly legal in the UK are either restricted or banned in the UAE:
- Certain prescription medications — including some codeine-based painkillers and specific sleep or anxiety medications — are controlled substances in the UAE. Carry a GP letter and original pharmacy packaging. Check the MOHAP website before travelling with any prescription drugs.
- CBD products — illegal in the UAE regardless of UK law. Do not travel with them.
- Alcohol — you may bring up to 4 litres of alcohol or 2 cartons of beer for personal use. This is the duty-free allowance, not general permission.
- Device content — UAE customs can check phones and laptops. Content that criticises the UAE government, or material deemed offensive under UAE law, can result in serious legal consequences.

Before you leave for the airport, run through this:
