For years, the Dubai visa run kept thousands of expats, remote workers and long-stay visitors in the UAE legally.

You crossed into Oman, waited a few hours at a border post, came back, and reset your visit visa for another 30 days. Simple and cheap.

Then in late 2025, the UAE government changed the rules. And for most people, the calculation shifted overnight. The UAE introduced online visa extensions that can be processed without leaving the country.

The online visa extension now means you no longer have to leave the country to reset your stay. However, that does not apply to everyone.

With changing rules, there is ample confusion about what the current rules allow.

This guide explains where things stand in 2026: what changed, who still needs a visa run, who definitely does not, and what the alternatives are.

What Is a Dubai Visa Run?

A visa run is when you leave the UAE, cross into a neighbouring country (most commonly Oman) and immediately return.

The act of exiting and re-entering resets your visit visa, giving you a fresh period of legal stay.

Why did people do this?

The standard UAE visit visa lasts 30 or 60 days. Once it expires, you either leave permanently or find a way to extend your stay.

For years, there was no clean in-country extension process.

So the practical solution was to drive two hours to the Omani border, get an exit stamp, wait a short while, then drive back and receive a fresh entry stamp.

It was cheap, slightly tedious, and almost universally practised by:

• Freelancers and remote workers based in Dubai
• Expats between employment visas
• Long-stay visitors who had not yet established formal residency
• Retirees or semi-retired professionals spending extended time in the UAE

The visa run was never an official mechanism.

It was simply a gap in the system that people used. And for a long time, authorities tolerated it quietly.

What Changed in Late 2025

In December 2025, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) confirmed that most 30-day and 60-day tourist and visit visas can now be extended fully online, through the ICP portal, without the holder needing to exit the UAE.

If you overstay even by a single day, the standard extension becomes unavailable. Fines start the day after your visa expires at AED 50 per day.

The old informal grace period is gone. Apply before expiry, every time.

Who Still Needs to Do a Visa Run in 2026?

For most tourists and short-to-medium term visitors, Dubai to Oman visa run, or the most popularly known as Dubai to Hatta visa run, is now obsolete.

BUT, there are specific cases where exiting and re-entering remains either necessary or the only practical option.

The 90-day multiple entry visa is generally not eligible for the online extension. UK passport holders who arrive on the standard free stamp and want to stay beyond 90 days in a 6-month window need to either leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type.

The ICP online extension is typically available once or twice, depending on visa type. Once the extensions are exhausted, exiting and starting fresh is the only option.

For those who do need to exit, Oman remains the most practical destination.

The land crossing at Hatta–Madam Buraimi (approximately 2 hours from Dubai) or the Al Ghuwaifat crossing on the Abu Dhabi side are the most commonly used.

Georgia (Tbilisi) has become an increasingly popular visa run destination for longer-term expats who combine the trip with a short break. Flights are approximately 3–4 hours from Dubai, and Georgia’s visa-free policy for most nationalities makes it an easy transit point for resetting a UAE visit status.

Important Caveats About Visa Runs in 2026

Several changes to be aware of before planning a visa run:

• UAE immigration tracks entry and exit patterns. Repeatedly exiting and re-entering on tourist visas without establishing residency can prompt questions at the border. There is no official rule against it, but officers have discretion and serial visa runners have been refused entry in recent years.
• Oman now charges a visa fee for most nationalities. British citizens previously entered Oman visa-free for short stays, but confirm the current rules before your trip as these change periodically.
• There is no guaranteed right of re-entry. Crossing into Oman and returning to the UAE does not automatically entitle you to another 90-day stamp. Immigration officers at the return crossing can ask questions, and if they believe you are using tourist status for long-term stay, they can refuse entry or grant a shorter period.
• The 180-day rule. UK citizens’ 90-day visa is valid for 180 days from issue. Once that 180-day window closes, simply returning from Oman does not reset the clock — you receive a new 180-day window from the date of re-entry, but sustained presence in the UAE on tourist visas across consecutive years is increasingly scrutinised.

The Smarter Alternative: Residency Pathways

For anyone spending significant time in Dubai — more than 6 months per year, or planning to live here — the visa run or extension cycle is a holding pattern, not a long-term strategy.

The UAE has expanded its formal residency options substantially.

The most relevant pathways for UK nationals:

• Employment visa: Sponsored by a UAE employer. The most common route. 2–3 year renewable residency.

• Freelance and remote work visa: Available to self-employed and remote professionals. Requires income verification and bank statements. 1–2 year renewable.
• Property owner visa: For owners of property worth AED 750,000 or above (separate from the Golden Visa threshold). 2–3 year renewable.

Any of these provides the right to live in the UAE without the rolling visa management that tourist status requires. For anyone serious about Dubai as a long-term base, the visa run era is over — replaced by formal residency pathways that are considerably more accessible than they used to be.

Should You Do a Visa Run in 2026?

• If you are on a 30-day or 60-day tourist visa: use the ICP online extension instead. AED 600, no travel, done in 24–48 hours.
• If you are a UK citizen on the 90-day on-arrival stamp and need more time: exiting and re-entering is still the primary option, but consider whether formal residency makes more sense if this is a recurring need.
• If you have exhausted your extension allowance: exit and re-enter, but be aware of the scrutiny risk if this is a regular pattern.
• If you are planning to be in Dubai long-term: investigate formal residency. The monthly visa run is a 2019 solution to a 2026 problem that has better answers.
