Why the half term October 2026 Dates were changed
In early 2026 the UAE Ministry of Education published a single academic calendar covering three years at once — 2026-27, 2027-28 and 2028-29 — so that families, employers and schools could plan further ahead than one year at a time. For 2026-27 that calendar sets the first-semester mid-term break at 12–18 October 2026, which translates into the five school days of 12–16 October.
Some Dubai private schools had already printed their own October dates before that calendar landed, or had built their year around the 19–23 October week they used in previous years. KHDA then reminded private schools in Dubai to keep to the unified dates, and schools have been reissuing calendars to parents ever since.
What KHDA actually said
KHDA reminded all private schools in Dubai to adhere to the unified academic calendar dates issued by the Ministry of Education for the 2026-27 academic year, and to communicate those dates clearly to their school communities. The regulator’s point was consistency: families with children in two different schools should not be juggling two different half terms.
The practical effect is a more predictable year. Until this year, the October break could land anywhere from the second to the last week of the month depending on the school. From 2026-27 onwards, the default answer to “when is Dubai school half term” is the same for most of the emirate.

The single most common mistake this month is trusting a calendar PDF downloaded in the summer, or just relying on social media. Open the school’s parent portal today, find the document with the most recent date on it, and confirm both the last day of term and the first day back before you pay for anything. UK October half term 2026 vs Dubai
This is the part that catches expat families, and it is a bigger gap than usual this year.
Most schools in England break for half term in the week of 26 to 30 October 2026. Dubai breaks a fortnight earlier, from 12 to 16 October.

What that means in practice:
- Cousins and grandchildren will not line up. If the plan was for UK-based family to travel when both sets of children were off, that overlap has gone.
- UK attractions will be quieter. Travelling to the UK in the week of 12 October means arriving before the British half-term rush, which usually means cheaper accommodation and shorter queues.
- Flights out of Dubai will peak earlier. The demand spike on Dubai routes now falls on the weekends of 9–11 and 17–18 October rather than a week later.
- Diwali is separate. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, well after the break, so families planning India travel around it are looking at a different window entirely.
A handful of English councils — Leicester and Leicestershire among them — break the week of 19 October instead, and academies set their own dates, so check the specific school rather than the country.

What to do during Dubai school half term in October 2026
Moving the break a week earlier has one real downside: the weather.
Dubai’s biggest temperature drop of the year happens around the middle of October. Break in the week of the 12th and you are still on the hot side of that curve.

Five ways to use the nine days
- Holiday camps. Most large Dubai schools and sports academies run a half-term camp in the break week. Because the dates moved, some providers had to redo their schedules — check availability for the week of 12 October rather than assuming last year’s provider is running the same programme.
- Indoor attractions. This is the week for the indoor ski slope, aquariums, trampoline parks, indoor karting and the big mall attractions, all of which run extended half-term programming.
- Water parks, early. Gates open mid-morning, and the first two hours are the most comfortable ones you will get in mid-October.
- A short-haul trip. A five-day break works well for Oman, Saudi Arabia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Jordan, the Maldives or Sri Lanka. It works badly for anything that costs you two days in the air.
