What Do the UAE Flag Colours Mean? The Answer Is in a Poem Every Dubaian Should Know (2026)
On the UAE flag, white stands for good deeds and generosity, red for the sacrifices of earlier generations, green for growth and prosperity, and black for strength and resilience. They are linked to a line by the 14th-century poet Safi Al Din Al Hilli. Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah designed it in 1971, at 19.
You see this flag every day, on buildings, on cars and on school walls. Here is what the UAE flag colours mean: white is for good deeds and generosity, red for the sacrifices of the generation before, green for growth and prosperity, and black for strength and resilience.
Behind those four colours is a line of poetry written about seven hundred years ago. There is also a 19-year-old who entered a competition, and who learned he had won only by standing outside a palace and waiting for the wind.
What the UAE Flag Colours Mean
Here is the old poem the four colours are linked to, what each colour stands for, one colour at a time, and six things about the flag that you probably did not know.
All four colours are linked to one line of poetry. It was written by Safi Al Din Al Hilli, an Iraqi poet of the 14th century, and The National gives it in English like this:
> "White are our acts, black our battles, green our fields, and red our swords."
The Dubai Protocol and Hospitality Department, a Dubai government office, says the flag's designer was inspired by verses from this poem. In another interview he gave other reasons and did not mention the poem, so the careful way to say it is that the colours are linked to the poem, or inspired by it.
Here is the flag, with the official meaning beside each colour:
Here is each colour in turn, in the flag's own order: the red band first, then green, white and black from top to bottom.
What Does Red Mean on the UAE Flag?
Red stands for the sacrifices of earlier generations. The UAE Government Media Office, in its flag guidelines, says red remembers the previous generation of Emiratis, who gave so much to protect the homeland, what it had achieved and what it valued. On the flag, red is the upright band at the pole side.
The poem gives red to "our swords". The two sit close together, because a sword is what people carry when they have a home to defend, and the official meaning remembers the people who defended it.
Many newspapers and websites say instead that red is for bravery, strength and courage. That is not the official wording, but it is the same story told about the fighter where the guidelines tell it about the giving.
What Does Green Mean on the UAE Flag?
Green stands for growth and prosperity, and the guidelines add the picture of a country that is flourishing and full of life. Green is the top band of the three that run across the flag.
The poem gives green to "our fields", and this is where the poem and the official meaning fit most easily. A green field is growth you can see.
Green is also the colour that sources argue about least. The lists you read elsewhere usually say hope, growth and prosperity, which adds one word and takes nothing away.
What Does White Mean on the UAE Flag?
White stands for good deeds and generosity. The guidelines describe it as the giving nature that Emiratis are known for. White is the middle band, between the green above and the black below.
The poem gives white to "our acts", meaning the things people do. That is almost the official meaning already, so white is the colour where you can still hear the poet most clearly.
Elsewhere you will often read that white is for peace, or for peace and honesty. The official wording is about doing good and giving, and that is the one to use for a school project or a quiz.
What Does Black Mean on the UAE Flag?
Black stands for strength, resilience and courage, and it is the bottom band of the flag. The poem gives black to "our battles", and the two belong together, because a battle is where strength and courage are tested.
Then there is the question everyone asks: is black for oil? Officially, no, and the guidelines do not mention oil. The magazine What's On says the same: black is strength, and not oil.
But the idea did not come from nowhere. The designer himself said in a 2011 interview that he chose black for the oil that transformed the country, and he added that meanings change over time. So if a colleague tells you black is for oil, smile. They are repeating the man who made the flag.
6 Things You Did Not Know About the UAE Flag
The other half of the story is how the flag came to be, and these six things are the ones worth passing on.
- The four colours are shared with other Arab flags. Red, green, white and black are known as the Pan-Arab colours, and The National traces them to the Arab Revolt of 1916. The poem is older still: Al Hilli lived centuries before the UAE existed, so his line inspired the flag and was never written about it.
- The flag is exactly twice as wide as it is high. The red band takes a quarter of that width, and Dubai Protocol points out that the four colours together look like the letter E.
- The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan raised it for the first time on 2 December 1971, the day the union of the emirates was declared. Eight days later, the flag flew at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
- Its designer was a 19-year-old who answered a newspaper advert. Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah made his entry in 1971 with rolls of coloured paper, scissors and a set of measuring tools. About 1,030 designs were sent in and six were shortlisted, Dubai Protocol says.
- The prize was 4,000 riyals, because the dirham did not exist yet. He said later that the money mattered far less to him than seeing his design chosen.
- When the flag went up, nobody had told him he had won. The shortlisted designs had been printed in the newspapers in black and white, so he could not tell. On 2 December 1971 he went to Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, where a flag was going up, and stood on his toes to look. He told The National what happened next.
“There was no wind that day, so I waited until there was a draft...”
Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, speaking to The National, November 2011
When the wind came, he could see that the flag on the pole was his.
You will see that flag everywhere on 3 November, because that is the day offices, schools and homes across the country raise it together, and our guide to UAE Flag Day explains why. If you are putting one up yourself, our guide on how to hang the UAE flag shows where each colour goes.
