Dubai is about to get a lot more orange.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum — Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence — has directed the expansion of flame tree planting across the emirate’s streets, parks, public spaces and homes.

The initiative comes with a community angle: free flame tree seedlings will be distributed to residents who want to plant one at home or on their farm.

Here is what the tree is, what HH said, and what residents can actually do about it.

What Sheikh Hamdan announced

HH Sheikh Hamdan held a meeting on Saturday with Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation. Out of that meeting came a directive to expand flame tree planting across every part of the city — streets, residential areas, public parks, recreational spaces, vital intersections and community majlises. The Crown Prince also chairs the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation, which means the initiative sits inside Dubai’s broader urban sustainability plan.

HH then shared the announcement publicly through a video on his official X account (@HamdanMohammed), inviting residents to celebrate the tree’s role in the city’s summer landscape. He directed authorities to distribute seedlings to anyone who wants to plant a flame tree at home or on their farm.

The tree blooms across May, June and July — meaning the timing is deliberate.

Plant now, bloom now.

“In summer, when the Flame Tree blooms in Dubai, it brings life to every home, every majlis, every street, and every park. With it, our city blooms, full of life and beauty.” — HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, 2 May 2026

What the flame tree is

The flame tree’s scientific name is Delonix regia. It thrives in hot climates, which is why it’s spread across most tropical and subtropical regions in the world — and why it suits Dubai’s summer specifically.

The fiery-orange flowers it produces from May to July are how most residents recognise it, but the tree’s real value to the city is the cooling shade it throws.

How to get a free flame tree seedling

The seedling distribution programme is being run by Dubai Municipality. Specific application channels and pickup details have not been published yet — the directive came on Saturday 2 May 2026 and the municipality is still rolling out the public-facing scheme.

🌱 Where to look for updates

  1. Dubai Municipality website: dm.gov.ae — official portal, expect a dedicated landing page
  2. Dubai Municipality social media: @DubaiMunicipality on X and Instagram for fastest announcements
  3. Dubai 311: Call 800 9090 to ask about pickup points or registration
  4. DM smart app: Likely the digital application channel — download via App Store or Google Play

Q: When can residents claim flame tree seedlings?

A: Dubai Municipality has not yet published specific dates or pickup locations. The directive was announced on 2 May 2026 — expect details within the coming weeks. We will update this page when the official scheme goes live.

How to plant a flame tree at home

If you secure a seedling, the planting itself is straightforward. Flame trees are forgiving once established, and Dubai’s standard sandy or clay garden soil works without amendment.

🌳 Planting checklist

  1. Pick a sunny, open spot — full sun is essential; the canopy will spread up to 15m
  2. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly deeper
  3. Use well-drained soil — sandy or clay, not waterlogged
  4. Water deeply for the first two weeks — then taper to weekly during summer
  5. Stake young trees against Dubai’s strong summer winds for the first year
Important spacing rule: A mature flame tree needs at least 8 metres of clear space from buildings, walls and underground utility lines. Smaller villa gardens may not be suitable — check with Dubai Municipality before planting near boundaries.

Why Dubai is doing this — the bigger picture

The flame tree expansion sits inside Dubai’s broader urban greening strategy, run jointly by Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Future Foundation. The aim is to reduce the “urban heat island” effect — the phenomenon where built-up areas absorb and re-radiate heat, making cities significantly hotter than surrounding open land.

  • 50,000+ flame trees already planted across Dubai’s roads and parks
  • Trees lower neighbourhood temperatures, cutting demand on air conditioning
  • Aligned with Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan goals on liveable streets
  • Public participation through seedlings widens the impact beyond municipal land

A flame tree planted today shades a Dubai resident in 2086. With a 60-year lifespan and just 10 years to maturity, every seedling claimed this month is a long-term gift to a future neighbour.
